What is Tempeh Bacon and where can i buy it? Well i have found one on Amazon as you can see to the right. But just because one has taken a pledge to go vegetarian it dosen’t  mean that you dont have cravings for meat, least of all pork bacon.

This has led to advancement of recipes to come up with delicious alternatives to meat. One such alternative is Tempeh. It is simply very interesting how this delicacy is prepared from soybeans. It is made from soybean cake that is commonly found in Indonesia. In fact, this soybean cake is the one referred to as tempeh. Tempeh is very rich in proteins.

How to prepare Tempeh

Preparation of tempeh takes place through a number of steps. These steps are discussed below:

To start with, the tempeh cake to be used in this process has to be prepared. This is done with soybeans that are partially cooked. They have to be mixed with vinegar and left to ferment for up to three days. The resulting tempeh cake can now be comfortably sliced into pieces.

The tempeh should then be sliced into strips that bear resemblance to bacon strips. There are various recipes for cooking the tempeh afterwards.

Commonly used flavorings for Tempeh

The whole purpose of treating tempeh is to make it acquire a bacon taste. Several flavorings have to be used. These will vary depending with preferences of consumer. The most common ingredients for this flavoring process include liquid smoke, soy sauce, paprika, brown sugar/cider vinegar, chili sauce, hot sauce among others.

It is important to note that liquid smoke is the one responsible for giving the tempeh slices a taste similar to that of grilled bacon.

Once again, the flavoring techniques vary with consumer preferences. Some prefer to have the tempeh slices marinated in the flavoring mixture prior to cooking. This means that raw slices of tempeh are first flavored before being cooked.

Alternatively, the tempeh slices may first be browned before being brushed with the mixture of flavorings. This means that the tempeh slices are first cooked then brushed with the flavoring mixture before being allowed to dry.

How to cook Tempeh?

Just as the flavoring techniques vary, so does the cooking procedures. Different cooks have soft spots for different cooking techniques.

  • A good example of a common cooking technique is browning the tempeh slices with cooking oil in a stove-top skillet.
  • Another common cooking procedure is placing the tempeh slices in a baking dish followed by oven cooking.

Once done, you are now set to enjoy your delicious tempeh bacon whose taste is a replica of the original bacon. This way, you feel as if you are eating bacon though your diet is absolutely vegan.
